Volaris in the Media: Top Dealmaker, Protecting AI Innovations, and more

Dilys Chan

Since our last edition of Volaris in the Media, our company and our leaders have once again been recognized in several outside publications.

This roundup showcases the expertise we possess within the Volaris network and our leaders’ commitment to developing close relationships within the regions of the world where we operate.

Here is a roundup of the activity over the last few months.

Constellation Software, Volaris Group’s parent company, recognized as a top dealmaker

Data visualization website Visual Capitalist ranked Constellation Software among the world’s most acquisitive companies. Their chart uses data from the European Commission to visualize the top 15 companies in the world ranked by average number of deals per year from 2008 to 2020.

The list is dominated by names in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, showing favorable conditions for consolidation in the industry. Constellation Software is unique among the list which includes large technology names such as Microsoft, Apple, Meta, and Alphabet. Unlike other companies (such as Microsoft, which made high-profile acquisitions of LinkedIn, Skype, and GitHub), Constellation has made a name for itself by seeing value in acquiring smaller, mission-critical B2B software businesses.

Constellation was also recognized by Corum Group as a top acquirer of the year in 2024, as it has for several years running.

How can software companies best protect their AI-based innovations?

Many businesses face this challenge when developing their intellectual property (IP) strategy. Aaraf Dewan, Senior Legal Counsel in the Justice and Emerging Markets portfolio at Volaris Group, gave his expert commentary in Lexpert, a leading Canadian publication covering business law.

While patents protect functional aspects of a software product, such as trade secrets and trademarks for logos, they can also be costly for businesses trying to remain capital-efficient. Copyright is less expensive, but it only protects source code.

Dewan advises that it’s important for businesses to determine the right IP strategy early in the process, because a poorly designed strategy can be expensive to correct in the future and potentially limit a company’s freedom to operate.

The article also highlights complexities that are specific to AI healthcare companies, including ensuring patient confidentiality while complying with IP and regulatory requirements.

Building skills for a global digital economy of the future

Adapt IT, part of the Omegro portfolio within the Volaris Group network, marked World Science Day in South Africa by celebrating the achievements of a remarkable science educator.

Adapt IT commended Zandisiwe Ngayo, an educator at Mzomhle Senior Secondary School, for her innovative approach in curriculum delivery. As part of its corporate social investment and in partnership with the Adopt-a-School Foundation, Adapt IT adopted the school in 2021 and has since donated digital resources including digital boards, laptops, tablets, robotic kits and information and communication technology (ICT) training for teachers and school management team etc. These tools enable integration between curriculum and ICT. These additional resources have helped the school overcome hurdles such as a lack of textbooks and laboratory materials. Ngayo has used them to deliver innovative lessons, such as demonstrating online experiments.

Adapt IT CEO Tiffany Dunsdon praised Ngayo’s excellence in teaching and stated: “This World Science Day, we encourage the youth and more young women to take an interest in STEM subjects at school and at tertiary level to bolster the skills base needed to participate effectively in the global digital economy of the future.”

Leadership within a community of Canadian entrepreneurs

Volaris Group Executive Chairman Mark Miller was a keynote speaker at ventureLAB’s HardTech Summit in November. He shared his entrepreneurial journey, starting from his co-founding of Trapeze Group to his success after Trapeze was acquired by Constellation Software.

“Since joining ventureLAB as a member of the board in 2020, Mark has significantly grown and impacted our ecosystem, proving that continuous growth and diverse talent are key to success in the tech industry,” reads the ventureLAB blog.

Agriculture’s role in ensuring food security

As a business leader within Cultura Technologies, Agronomix Software President Christopher Leonard is a regular contributor to SeedWorld, a publication for seed and agriculture industry professionals, regulators, educators and farmers.

Most recently, he wrote about how the agriculture industry can use technology to analyze and manage crop data. Agronomix has seen crop researchers use software to develop crops that can perform in a variety of climates, which enables increased yields and ultimately allows farmers to better feed the world’s population.

“Feeding the world starts with us,” he writes. “At Agronomix, we go to work every day with the goal of helping our clients ensure that every single person on this planet, regardless of where they are located around the globe, has access to nutritious food that’s produced sustainably, benefiting both the environment and future generations.”

Volaris COO and CFO Brian Beattie was appointed to the Board of Directors of Flow Capital Corp. “His knowledge will be valuable in guiding Flow Capital’s strategic growth and providing insights into supporting technology-driven businesses,” reads the press release from Flow Capital.
