Small Company, Big Network: Dean Coleman on Scaling Sunrise with Volaris

Sarah Hill-Stapley

When Sunrise Software joined Volaris Group in 2022, it set the stage for the company’s next generation of leadership and growth. Dean Coleman, a long-time Sunrise employee who had been with the company since 2014, stepped into the CEO role, marking a new chapter of momentum and focus for the business.

Sunrise, known for its IT Service Management software serving healthcare and a range of other sectors, has expanded its focus beyond just tools.

Under Dean’s leadership, the company has become more data-led, leveraging Volaris’s proprietary benchmarks and best practices to deliver greater value to its customers. Coming from a background as Head of Service Delivery, Dean brings real operational insight into the complexities of service management; insight he now applies in leading Sunrise as CEO.

One of the biggest changes since joining the Volaris network? The access to peers, shared learning and development. Dean describes how Sunrise continues to be a small, agile company, while being backed by Volaris — giving customers the benefit of nimble service and strong long-term support.

Dean also speaks candidly to leaders considering acquisition, especially those weighing what it means for their people and long-term security. As he puts it:

If any CEO is thinking of an acquisition by Volaris, I would say look at doing it. Your business will develop; it will grow. Your people will grow. And they’ll provide you with the level of security for your staff and your business so that the legacy of your business can continue.

Background: Sunrise Software’s Journey with Volaris

Sunrise Software joined Volaris Group when owner Tom Weston sold the business as part of his retirement and succession plans. During the transition, Volaris Group Leader Steven Denning-Garrison stepped in as interim CEO while Sunrise stabilized under new ownership.

As part of the long-term succession plan, Dean Coleman was enrolled in LEAP, Volaris’s executive development program designed to prepare leaders for senior executive positions and the responsibility of leading a business. Dean describes LEAP as an enduring commitment to cultivating leadership.

LEAP is the single most impactful leadership development program I have attended in a very long career to date. The program taught me many valuable skills and gave us countless takeaways.

Since joining Volaris, Sunrise has seen meaningful progress across the business — with consistent delivery from its development teams, strengthened commercial activity, and renewed momentum in product and customer-facing initiatives.

Today, Sunrise serves a range of sectors, with a strong foothold in healthcare, alongside public sector organizations, educational institutions, service providers, and financial services.
