Guest Blog: A Millennial’s Take on Millennials

We wanted to switch it up and have a different perspective on one of today’s popular topics: millennials. I’ve previously talked about working with this generation, but we thought it would be interesting to find out what millennials want straight from the horse’s mouth: another millennial.

So this week I asked Anna Buchner – a Marketing Associate at Volaris – to helm this blog. Anna, take it away.


 
   

Millennials – everyone’s favourite generation to talk about. There’s a lot of information floating around the internet about us. Some of it is right on the money while some misses the mark completely. Yes, we’re the largest cohort since the Baby Boomers and due to our size, we will impact the workforce.

Does that mean you need to completely change your management style? Absolutely not. But if you really want to get the most out of working with us, here’s what you need to know.

We Want to Learn and Grow

Millennials were the first generation to grow up with the internet and have the world at our fingertips. With access to knowledge like never before, we’ve developed a thirst for learning and growing both personally and in our careers.
 
There’s a misconception that millennials continually job hop because we get bored easily. In fact, we change jobs when we feel that our talent isn’t being developed and there’s no growth opportunities available. We value development plans much more than our predecessors and want employers that are interested in nurturing the next generation of leaders.

We’re Ambitious

As a result of being told that we can do/be anything we wanted, millennials have some big dreams that we want to accomplish. We truly want to be the best, like no one ever was. Millennials will work hard to get where we want to be in life so don’t be surprised when we ask for new opportunities to take on.

Climbing the corporate ladder and advancing our career is very important to us. We don’t expect to go from entry level to CEO in 5 years, but our end goal is on the C-Suite and we will do what it takes to get there.

We Can Handle Many Responsibilities at Once

Growing up, it was expected of us to get good grades, participate in extracurricular activities, volunteer, have a part time job all while maintaining a healthy social life. Juggling multiple commitments is the norm for all of us and that continued when we entered the workforce.

It’s not uncommon for millennials to have multiple jobs/volunteer positions simultaneously. Some might think that that means we aren’t committed to our full time jobs, but that’s not the case. For example, I work full time here at Volaris but I also volunteer as a social media director for two charities. Despite what might be going on with my volunteer work, my number one priority is also my work at Volaris and will make sure that gets done first before focusing my energy elsewhere.

Don’t Coddle Us

Millennials are called the “me” generation because we grew up in a time where we got participation ribbons for showing up and were told that we were special over and over. While that has given us confidence to go out and accomplish great things, we know the world does not revolve around us.

We don’t need – nor want – to be coddled and hand held at work. What we really crave is consistent feedback, both positive and constructive. Like any employee, millennials desire a job well done every now and then, but nothing to the levels that people believe we need.

Some Job Security Please?

We millennials are a distrusting bunch. You might think that’s absurd but hear me out. Within the past 16 years, millennials have witnessed countless terrorist attacks all over the world. We lived through the global recession of 2008 where many of our family and friends lost everything. There’s the energy crisis that we are now currently facing and don’t even get me started on the world’s political state. Not exactly a great world that we’re inheriting.

With what we’ve witnessed in these unstable times, all we desire is some stability – especially on the job front. Show us some loyalty and we in turn will be loyal to the company. That’s really all millennials want.

Putting it All Together

Well, there you have it. I could go on about my generation, but that’s really the gist of who we are as a whole. Sure, you’re going to come across some of us who aren’t congruent with these broad generalizations, but isn’t that true of every generation? As more and more of us enter the workforce, we just want to become the next generation of leaders. With your help and guidance, we can.
