3 Reasons to Hire Interns

Interns are more than just young hires who make coffee runs and do all the photocopying. At Volaris, many of our business units employ interns in many different areas including research and development, finance, marketing, or HR. Here in our Toronto office, we have interns year round and each one spends about 4 months at a time with us.

Why do we utilize interns? Here are our 3 main reasons.

1) Complete Short Terms Projects (and Start Long Term Ones!)

Sometimes we get so bogged down in our day to day work that we don’t get to spend the time on projects we want to get off the back burner. Or other times, we want to get a long term project off the ground, but don’t have enough hours in the day to do so. That’s where interns come in. Our first intern here at Volaris helped to launch our blog and another took ownership of growing our social media presence. Those are just some examples of the work our marketing interns have done in the past, but we have interns who are doing some great things in many different areas across our businesses.

2) Find New Talent

As the war on talent continues and baby boomers phase out of the workforce, it’s imperative to find millennials who can be groomed to be the next generation of leaders. Hiring interns is a great way to scout for best and brightest of the next generation. The intern that helped us launch our blog – she now works for Volaris full time in our marketing department. She isn`t the only intern that has been hired on full time after completing their internship; there have been many other success stories. If it weren`t for our internship program, we wouldn`t have been able to spot these talented individuals.

3) Mentor the Next Generation

At Volaris, talent management is one of the core principles that the company is built on. We firmly believe that investing in and developing our people is one of the keys to success. Hiring interns is great opportunity to develop and mentor the next wave of employees entering the workforce. But interns aren’t the only ones being mentored either. Cross mentorship often happens because these individuals have an unique take on business and can teach us a thing or too as well.

Your Turn

Now that you know why we hire interns, would you? Do you currently hire interns? What has the experience been like? Let us know on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or Google+.
